BREAKING NEWS: Colls to Accept Same Sex Marriage Applications at Noon, Friday

by Mark Swanson•

UPDATE: Haddonfield Mayor Jeff Kasko says his town will not accept same sex marriage applications yet, preferring to wait on the Supreme Court ruling.
Oaklyn Mayor Robert Forbes says his town will start accepting same sex marriage applications at 8 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 21 because the borough clerk’s office closes at noon on Fridays.

While Collingswood waits for state-level instructions about how to handle same-sex marriages, Mayor Jim Maley announced on Friday that the borough will begin accepting applications at noon.
Couples interested in applying for same-sex marriages in Collingswood should apply at the borough hall after noon on Friday, Oct. 18.
Maley acknowledged that there is some confusion around the state about what municipalities can do following a NJ Superior Court decision on Sept. 27. That decision from Judge Mary C. Jacobson rules that the state’s civil union law violated the civil rights of same sex couples.
She ordered that on Monday, Oct. 21, same sex couples must be allowed to marry.
The Christie administration has appealed the decision and is seeking a stay. That action is pending before the NJ Supreme Court.
New Jersey currently has a 72-hour requirement between applying for and receiving marriage licenses. In order for same sex couples to marry on Monday, they would have to be allowed to submit their applications on Friday, Oct. 18.
Unless the NJ Supreme Court issues a stay, Maley said has eight or nine people interested in having him perform same sex marriages on Monday. He intends to fulfill his duties as the mayor for those with completed applications.
